Train Like a Pro with System Boards
Precision Climbing for Strength and Technique
System board climbing is a focused, training-oriented style of bouldering that uses a fixed, flat wall—called a system board—designed to develop strength, technique, and movement precision. Unlike other gym walls, the holds on system boards don’t change. Instead, climbers can light up endless combinations of holds to create and repeat problems. Because system boards are standardized, climbers across the world can try the same climbs. Many boards feature mirrored holds for symmetrical movement training, and adjustable angles to fine-tune difficulty—making them ideal for targeted progression and performance tracking.
The Spot is proud to offer a variety of system boards across our locations. Boulder is home to the Woods Board, one of the most advanced boards on the market, designed by elite climber Daniel Woods with small, demanding holds for high-level training. Denver features both a Tension 2 and a Kilter Board, while Golden houses a Kilter Board as well. Louisville is home to the notoriously finger-intensive MoonBoard. Each Spot location also offers a spray wall—unique, non-lighted system-style boards with fixed holds. Though the problems don’t light up, spray walls offer the same consistent, customizable terrain ideal for creative climbing and long-term progression.
Woods Board
Available at The Spot Boulder, this brand new 12’x12′ board from Daniel Woods and Menagerie Climbing was designed to maximize training, creativity & fun. With an assortment of wood and plastic holds, adjustable angle, mirrored layout, and an IOS app, you can customize your training experience no matter your strength. With some of the most challenging holds ever set on a systems board, the Woods Board is designed challenge everyone, from beginners to V17 crushers.

The Woods Board app allows you to connect to the Woods Board on Apple devices. While the app is not yet available on Android, you can connect to the Woods Board using our iPad at The Spot Boulder.
After setting up your hold layout, you’ll see thousands of boulder problems to choose from and can even filter them by a specific grade range. Tap on a boulder to load it onto the board:
- Start holds are green
- Feet only holds are pink
- Hand and foot holds are yellow
- Finish holds are red
You can even create your own boulder problems, by tapping the + icon at the top, then tapping on holds that you’d like to include. Tap the hold again to change its color. Finally, you’ll name your problem and suggest a grade, and anyone will be able to find it and try it.
Kilter Board
Available at The Spot Denver and The Spot Golden, the Kilter Board Classic is a light-up climbing board that you control with your phone. With all plastic holds and an adjustable angle allowing you to climb from vertical terrain (0 degrees) to a steep grade (40+ degrees), the Kilter Board Classic is great for climbers new to board climbing and experts training powerful, dynamic moves. If you send a boulder problem at one angle, try climbing the same problem at a steeper angle to increase the difficulty gradually over time.

The Kilter Board app allows you to find our gyms’ boards (just search for The Spot Denver or The Spot Golden), connect via Bluetooth, and start climbing within minutes.
First, search your gym under the “Boards” tab. Select your gym, hit “All Climbs,” then select the angle the board is set to at the top.
If you want to change the angle of the board, ask a Spot staffer how to adjust the angle.
You have thousands of boulder problems to choose from and can even filter them by a specific grade range. Tap on a boulder and hit the light bulb at the top to load it onto the board:
- Start holds are green
- Feet only holds are yellow
- Hand and foot holds are blue
- Finish holds are purple
Matching on holds is allowed by default, unless otherwise specified.

Tension Board 2
Available at The Spot Denver and The Spot Louisville, the Tension Board 2 is another light-up climbing board that you control with your phone. Climbers of any skill level can challenge themselves, thanks to an adjustable angle. Many board climbers like the addition of wood holds to this board, which are easier on the skin, allowing for longer sessions. Great for training finger strength and body tension. Denver has the TB2 Mirror layout, while Louisville has the TB2 Spray layout.

The Tension Board app allows you to find our gyms’ boards, connect via Bluetooth, and start climbing within minutes. It functions nearly identically to the Kilter app.
First, search your gym under the “Boards” tab. Select The Spot Denver, hit “All Climbs,” then select the angle the board is set to at the top.
If you want to change the angle of the board, ask a Spot staffer how to adjust the angle.
You have thousands of boulder problems to choose from and can even filter them by a specific grade range. Tap on a boulder and hit the light bulb at the top to load it onto the board:
- Start holds are green
- Feet only holds are pink
- Hand and foot holds are blue

Matching on holds is allowed by default, but many problems note “No Matching” in the description. Check under the Info icon in the upper right.

Moon Board
Available at The Spot Boulder and The Spot Louisville, the Moon Board is a light-up climbing board that you control with your phone. Notoriously one of the most difficult systems boards around, the Moon Board is set at a fixed angle of 25 degrees, is asymmetrical, and contains both plastic and wood holds. Prepare for difficult climbs starting in the V3/4 range. Boulder has the Moon Board 2016 layout, while Louisville has the Moon Board 2019 Masters layout.

To connect to our board, first go to the “You” tab at the bottom of the app, hit “Select your board,” and search Louisville, CO. Select the 2019 Masters board.
You’ll find thousands of boulder problems to choose from under the “Home” tab. Filter by a specific grade range and star ratingings. Tap on a boulder to load it onto the board:
- Start holds are green
- Hand and foot holds are blue
- Finish holds are red
