How Our Denver Walls Were Built

Ever wonder what makes our walls at The Spot Denver rock solid?

Eldorado Climbing Walls custom built our bouldering walls for the unique needs of our historic building! Building permits indicate that the Walgreen Drug Co., now Walgreens, started constructing our building almost a century ago in 1929.

Because brick walls can’t sustain outward force, Eldorado had to mount our climbing walls strictly to the concrete floor with hundreds of criss-crossing steel beams. These are attached to birch plywood, which is reinforced with more wood in high-stress areas, and dotted with thousands of holes for t-nuts which our routesetters use to attach the climbing holds you pull on!

Fast forward to 2022 when we hosted the USA Climbing National Championships. The most qualified routesetters, as well as the strongest boulderers, flew in to Denver from all over the country for the competition, which was broadcast by ESPN and USA Climbing. You can think of a Nationals-level competition as the ultimate test of a gym's walls, enduring countless resets, volume placements, set screwing, and the strongest pulling force possible from elite athletes, all of which are a testament to Eldorado’s proud work at The Spot Denver.

So come check out this old Walgreens, and pull on some of the most unique climbing walls in the Front Range.
